Red Elephant Nature Trail
This easy 1.5 mile trail winds through a cool, moist forest, ending at Uper Big Creek Lake at an elevation of 9009 feet. Along the way you'll discover an inter-related community of plants, animals, microorganisms and processes like fire and predation. The Forest Service manages this forest ecosystem to conserve all its elements, while using some resources, like timber, water and recreation, for humans.
Pinkham Mountain Trails Located within 17 miles of Walden, Pinkham Mountain has a variety of trails for beginners and experts alike.
North Michigan Historic Nature Trail Explore and Enjoy Nature's Wonders. Below are some excerpts from points along the trail. The Most frequent visitors to the surrounding mountains were the Mountain Utes, and the Plains Arapahoes. These tribes crossed the high mountain passes from the east to hunt the abundant wildlife in the area, such as: Deer, elk, antelope, buffalo, wolf, grizzly and black bear. Moose were introduced into the area in 1978 and 1979 from groups in WY and UT. Currently over 600 moose inhabit North Park and approximately 100 hunting licenses are issued every year. Moose are very during the rutt and during the calving season. They inhabit and feed off of willow beds. Timber harvesting, and patch cuts, has occurred on the CSF since the early 1900's. This management method is beneficial in that it provides increased forage for wildlife and cattle... If you look and listen carefully to your surroundings you may hear or see the signs or calls of the local pine squirrels... Gold and Silver were discovered in the vicinity of the state forest in the early 1800's. Mining camps and towns with such names as Lulu City, Hitchens Camp, Dutch Town, Teller City and Tyner all sprang up overnight only to disappear as rapidly a few years later. Remains of these towns can still be found in the area...
